ITINERARY

Begin your day with an early departure from Bangkok, embarking on a journey to explore the historical richness of Lopburi and Ayutthaya. (2-2.5 hours) |
09:00 |
Visit Phra Prang Sam Yod or Lopburi Monkey Temple; best known landmark and provincial symbol. A former Hindu Shrine built in the 13th century in the classic Bayon style of Khmer architecture, the compound comprises three prangs (towers) linked by a corridor. |
|
Then visit Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat and Phra Narai Ratchaniwet Palace. |
12:00 |
After exploring Lopburi, make your way back to Ayutthaya. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, savoring traditional Thai cuisine to recharge for the afternoon’s adventures. |
13:00 |
Visit Wat Lokayasutharam, an abandoned temple and there is no absolute evidence that tells us which reign it was built in. None of the historical records or any chronicles have mentioned the period of construction. It is assumed that this temple was built in the Ayutthaya period. Perhaps it was abandoned after the fall of Ayutthaya to the invading Burmese in 2310 B.E. This temple houses a large Reclining Buddha Image 37 metres in length, built of bricks and plaster. Nearby there are some ruined posts of the Wihara. At the back, the ruins of Wihara, Ubosot and Prang still remain. |
|
Visit Wat Phra Si Sanphet, the most important temple within the Royal Palace compound and the original from which the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok was copied. Three outstanding Ceylonese style pagodas were built in the 15th century to enshrine the ashes of three Ayutthayan kings. |
|
Transfer to visit Wat Mahathat is located in front of the Grand Palace to the east, next to Pa Than Bridge. The temple is believed to be one of Ayutthaya’s oldest temples, possibly built by King Boromaraja I (1370-88). Its central prang, of which only the base remains, once rose to a height of 165 feet. Traces of the original stucco decorations can still be seen on some of the surrounding chedis. |
|
Across the Rivers to the south of the Island to visit Wat Chaiwatthanaram, one of the most imposing ancient Buddhist monasteries. The wat was established by King Prasatthong in 1630 and is believed to be located on the site of his former home. It is similar in architecture to Angkor Wat and may have been built to commemorate the king’s victory over Cambodia.
